Having large breasts may seem to be an enviable feature of a women’s body, but if the breasts are too large, there are many physical and emotional challenges. Large breasts can cause neck, shoulder, and back pain and even limit certain daily activities. Men may also consider breast reduction surgery due to a condition known as “gynecomastia” that causes their breasts to enlarge.
What is Breast Reduction?
Breast reduction offers a safe, surgical option that provides lasting pain relief along with increased self-confidence for women who want smaller, more youthful-looking breasts.
Breast Reduction Procedure
The general goal of breast reduction is to remove excess skin and tissue from the breast and, in some cases, reduce the size of the areola or reposition the nipple and areola. General anesthesia is required for breast reduction, and the procedure may take three to five hours. Full recovery is typically three to four weeks.
Dr. Stubbs has perfected a technique to make sure you have maintained a youthful-looking shape of your breasts after your reduction. Using this technique, you will not need drainage tubes during your recovery process. Your cleavage will remain intact and prominent.
Candidates for Breast Reduction
If you have any physical or emotional issues due to the large size of your breasts, breast reduction surgery may be right for you. The best way to find out if you are a good candidate for breast reduction at Signature Surgical Arts and Med Spa is to schedule a consultation appointment by calling our office at 616-396-1433.
Benefits of Breast Reduction
Breast reduction reduces the weight of your breasts and also improves the proportion of your breasts to the rest of your body, such as petite women who have large breasts. You are also better able to manage your daily activities and participate in sports after breast reduction, and you may find that your clothing fits better. Women should be aware that breast reduction may interfere with breastfeeding, so if you plan to become pregnant, discuss this with Dr. Stubbs during your consultation. Pregnancy, weight loss, and weight gain can affect the size and shape of your breasts after breast reduction surgery.
What to Expect Following Breast Reduction
Following breast reduction (also referred to as reduction mammoplasty most patients are required to wear a specialized post-operative bra that provides gentle compression to help minimize swelling. Patients are advised to rest following the procedure and avoid any arm extensions, vigorous activity or lifting for at least two to three weeks after the surgery to allow the incisions time to heal. As with most plastic surgery procedures, scars will be visible. However, these will be around the areola and along the underside of the breast. Not all women with large breasts are good candidates for reduction mammoplasty. As with all surgical procedures, there is a slight risk of drug reactions, infections, and bleeding, so be sure to discuss any concerns with Dr. Stubbs.
